San Diego, have we met?




On this trip to sunny Cali, I can't count how many times I've exclaimed, "This is like being in another country!" What with stucco, romantic beaches, palm trees and smells of the tropics in the air...

Now we've arrived in San Diego, and had a chance to take a little stroll. Feeling right at home.

First impressions: San Diego is for people who love the East Coast, and want to live it, but in 90 degree weather. Red brick houses, fire escapes, and streets paved with the same red brick, bar after bar after bar, hoards of young people out having fun on a Friday - on FOOT! - all screams Philly in July. Or Boston in July, really. We even saw an abnormal number of Red Sox and Celtics gear.

But could a snobby New Englander really live here... Stay tuned!

This weekend, my BFF finally made an honest man out of her BF. Two weeks ago, she was here for final preparations, and it happened to come out that I tend to cry at weddings. This simple fact caused so much uproar and incredulity, that I was partially offended: why is it so surprising? Belated outrage

There is so much wrong with this, I don't even know where to start. I think I'll start with the point of view of a pro-choice woman. I am not a feminist, not really, not in the classic sense of the word. However, by this age, I can recognize when rights are being granted and then taken away. So, by telling a woman that yes, she has the right to choose - but only if a man agrees, and signs a paper - is patronizing, offensive and incongruent. Plus, I'd like to point out the blind assumption that every woman who is pregnant out there has a man whose permission she has the chance to obtain; this implies horrendous stigma, as far as I'm concerned.
