Gogah, maker of his own destiny
My parents finally have managed to end up living in an idyllic private world. This urban idyll received the finishing touch when they obtained a cat. Actually, the cat obtained them, if you really examine the situation.
One day, I came around, and saw a pathetic looking skinny kitty hanging out on their back porch. They said, it had been coming around, it must be lost - but they felt bad for it, and although they didn't allow it to set foot in the house, they started feeding it.
"Make the cat a hotdog!" said dad. (mom makes hot dog) "Cut it into smaller pieces!" (mom cuts it into smaller pieces) "Cool it in the fridge!" (mom cools it) "Take outside for the cat!" (mom places little bowl outside) "Keep watch so that the neighbor's bully grey cat doesn't take it away!" (mom patiently keeps watch from the back porch).
Pictures were taken and adds about found kitty were placed all over the neighborhood.
Two guys, Benjamin and Benjamin's roommate, showed up ecstatic: this was their cat! His name was GoGo Boy, because being a tuxedo cat, his back paws were white, and that looked like he was wearing Go Go boots. GoGo Boy was taken away.
2 weeks later, he showed up again. Circling the house. Jumping up on the outside sill of the kitchen window and peering in like an evil stalker.
Benjamin was re-contacted, and came to get the cat.
2 weeks later, the cat was back. By this time, it had started to get cold. He would sit on the porch, and observe the comers and goers, sometimes nodding towards the entrance with a question in his eyes. Mom started to falter. Can't he come in the kitchen? It's cold... Dad was firm. Absolutely not. He is not a pet guy.
One night at dinner, I looked up - and jumped! The kitchen window had an animal attached to it! The cat was looking in, and hanging on the screen with its paws, like one of those stuffed suction cup toys people attach to the back windows of their cars. Occasionally, he would shake the screen, as if to say, let me in!
Apparently, he had been doing this. Shaking the screen, begging with his eyes... Courting and stalking my parents like the best of them.
Benjamin stopped returning phone calls. The cat, evidently, had broken his heart enough times.
One day, dad was fixing up the porch, sawing something outside. The cat was sitting beneath the porch, and looking up into a gentle rain of sawdust falling on his whiskers. Dad went around the back to get some nails, and the cat followed him to see what was going on. Dad came back to the porch; the cat reclaimed his spot beneath. Dad cut his finger, and cat got nervous, paced.
That day, after such compelling bonding, dad went to Home Depot for nails, and came back with a kitty shitbox.
A pillow was thrown in the corner of the kitchen. The cat obediently took his post there. No one addressed him directly, and there was much handwashing. The cat, gaze downcast, took the hazing process gracefully.
First just the kitchen, and then, the entire household became With Pet.
My parents russified the name "GoGo Boy" to Gogah, took the cat to the vet, purchased a scratch-stand and catnip, as well a covered litter box, a Costco-sized suitcase of 9 Lives, and several fuzzy toys, some of which hang from the ceiling providing hours and hours of fun for the whole family! It is safe to conclude, therefore, that my parents now have a bona fide pet.
The cat has gone from hanging outside the kitchen window to confidently and arrogantly pushing my mother out of bed to take his rightful place next to my dad. (Yeah, this cat clearly plays favorites, and he seems to be smitten with dad)
The moral of the story is. If you want something... Bond with it. Then get it.
